A Friendship for Today

Pat McKissack (2007), 170 pages
Audience: 4th Grade - 6th Grade
It's 1954 and Rosemary's school is being integrated. In the fall she won't be at her old elementary school with only black students, but will go to the 6th grade at a formerly all-white school. If that weren't difficult enough, she also has to cope with her best friend getting really sick and her parents fighting all the time. And when she starts school, she has to sit next to Grace Hamilton, who's from one of the msot racist families in town. With so much on her plate, it's sure to be a year with a lot of ups and downs for Rosemary.
