Annie and Simon

Catharine O'Neill (2008), 57 pages
Illustrated by Catharine O'Neill
Audience: Pre K / K - 3rd Grade
Annie loves to chat with her big, much older brother, Simon, and involve him in her adventures, such as her practice session as a hairdresser, toppling over in a canoe, and getting stung by a bee. Simon is always there for Annie and forever patient and caring, despite his sister's sometimes annoying characteristics. This story is an excellent easy reader about sibling relationships, featuring four episodes in the lives of Annie and Simon.

First Kids

Gibbs Davis (2004), 48 pages
Illustrated by Sally Wern Comport
Audience: 2nd Grade - 3rd Grade
When your dad is the president, your life can be a little strange. For example, somedays he works at home and other days he travels to work in a helicopter! But kids who live in the White House are pretty normal; they like to play pranks (such as bringing a horse upstairs into the bedroom) and have parties (including sleepovers) and generally have fun! This book introduces you to the fun and interesting children who have lived in the White House.

First the Egg

Laura Vaccaro Seeger (2007), 32 pages
Illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
Audience: Pre K / K - 2nd Grade
This beautiful concept book about change has vivid, textured art and meaningful cut-outs. Young children will enjoy learning about change in nature--from the egg to the chicken and from the tadpole to the frog as well as other creative processes, such as writing and painting. Many images have multiple purposes, showing the changibility and inter-relatedness of our world. Children will want to reach out and touch this art and flip pages back and forth while thinking about eggs, chickens, seeds, frogs, and words. Enjoy this intriguing and advanced addition to concept books.
