First the Egg

Laura Vaccaro Seeger (2007), 32 pages
Illustrated by Laura Vaccaro Seeger
Audience: Pre K / K - 2nd Grade
This beautiful concept book about change has vivid, textured art and meaningful cut-outs. Young children will enjoy learning about change in nature--from the egg to the chicken and from the tadpole to the frog as well as other creative processes, such as writing and painting. Many images have multiple purposes, showing the changibility and inter-relatedness of our world. Children will want to reach out and touch this art and flip pages back and forth while thinking about eggs, chickens, seeds, frogs, and words. Enjoy this intriguing and advanced addition to concept books.

Little Bird's Abc

Piet Grobler (2005), 56 pages
Illustrated by Piet Grobler
Audience: Pre K / K - 2nd Grade
Category: Animal, Concept, Humor
Young children will never look at birds the same way after experiencing this whimiscial introduction to the alphabet. For each letter, a spunky, playful bird performs an action or creates a sound to highlight the given letter. For instance, for the letter 'p,' a large round bird lays an egg; the illustration is accompanied by the word 'plop.' The drawings of the letters themselves tend to represent trees. The woodpecker breaks off the top half of the 't' by pecking at the 'tok-tok-tok' rhythm, and, several letters later, a bird curls up in an adorable nest in the curve of the 'y.' The charming line and watercolor drawings in this small, hand-sized book will make for a cozy and often hilarious alphabet lesson for preschoolers and early elementary school students.
