Shortly after Opal and her father, a preacher, move to Florida. Opal finds a dog at the Winn-Dixie supermarket. A big, ugly, dog she calls Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, her father tells Opal ten things about her missing mother, one for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, and Gloria Dump, and Otis, who plays the guitar for the animals in his pet shop.

One would think that Jess, a fifth grade boy, could never be friends with Leslie, a girl who comes to live next door to the farm Jess lives on in a rural area near Washington, D. C. Next, she is a girl, and Jess already has four sisters, most of whom he finds very annoying. Finally, Leslie has led a more privileged life than Jess. Her parents are writers who make an unconventional move to the country to get 'back to the basics', while Jess's family leads a near poverty level existence. In spite of all these factors, they become close friends and build an imaginary kingdom, Terabithia, where they can escape the real world. When a dreadful tragedy strikes, Jess must learn to deal with his own grief and the way his life has been forever changed by his friendshhip with Leslie.

This book was very scary. It was weird that she was threatend to be sewn buttons on her eyes! Eeek!
