Boston Jane:  The Claim

Jennifer Holm (2004), 229 pages
Audience: 4th Grade - 9th Grade
This book is the third in a series (following 'Boston Jane: An Adventure' and 'Boston Jane: Wilderness Days') about the adventurous and spunky Jane Peck who travels from Boston to Washington Territory. Just as life is becoming more settled and sophisticated in the town of Shoalwater Bay in the Washington Territory, Jane's life becomes socially and politically complicated. Her past classmate and enemy, the vindictive Sally Biddle, comes to town with her parents and seems, for a time, to destroy Jane's life. Jane's deep respect for the Chinook Indians gives her the spirit to stay true to her beliefs and character.

Climbing the Stairs

Padma Venkatraman (2008), 247 pages
Audience: 5th Grade - 12th Grade
Fifteen-year-old Vidya lives in British-occupied India during World War II and yearns for freedom on many levels--freedom for herself, to escape traditional Indian society in order to study in college; freedom from the British who have been dictating how Indians live; and, from an even wider scope, freedom from the Axis powers: Nazi Germany and Japan. When Vidya's father, a doctor, gets severely injured in a freedom protest, the family must move to their extended family's compound and live a traditional life, with men and women in separate living quarters. Vidja's desire for independence and learning soon cause her to break all the rules and bring about an emotional storm in the family.

Fairest

Gail Carson Levine (2006), 326 pages
Audience: 5th Grade - 12th Grade
The innkeepers at the Featherbed Inn find Aza as an infant, abandonned by her parents, left with almost nothing except a magical singing voice. Aza is hideously ugly and struggles emotionally with her looks. A duchess visiting the inn takes a liking to Aza and invites her to the marriage of the King to Ivi, who soon asks Aza to be her lady-in-waiting. As soon as Ivi reveals herself to be evil and Aza discovers the queen's magical mirror, parallels between 'Fairest' and 'Snow White' become clear. The vain queen will stop at nothing to remain the most beautiful (and to rule the harshest) in the land. Being in serious danger, Aza runs off to the Gnome Caverns, where she is protected by caring gnomes until she chokes on an apple. This adventurous and romantic tale will keep you spellbound until the last page.
