Calder Game

Blue Balliett (2008), 379 pages
Illustrated by Brett Helquist
Audience: 4th Grade - 9th Grade
In this third art mystery adventure by Balliett, Calder travels to England with his father. While his father is at a conference in Oxford, Calder explores the small, old village of Woodstock, where they are staying in a Bed and Breakfast. He soon discovers that a sculpture by Alexander Calder has recently been installed in the village's townsquare, and the villagers are furious about the modern intrusion. Within a few hours, both Calder the boy and the Calder sculpture are missing! Unable to find his son, Calder's father sends an alert to his son's two best friends and begs them to fly to England to help. Will Petra and Tommy be able to use their knowledge of Calder's interests and ways of thinking to find him? Mazes, puzzles, and stories from the past offer them many clues and distractions as they search using creative methods. As you read this mystery, try to find letters in the illustrations and arrange them for a secret message. The challenge was too difficult for this reviewer!

Case of the Mistaken Identity

Mac Barnett (2009), 179 pages
Illustrated by Adam Rex
Audience: 4th Grade - 7th Grade
This is the humorous, adventurous mystery you've all been waiting for. Twelve-year-old Steve Brixton has been longing to be a detective for ages. He's virtually memorized the Bailey Brothers' detective series and taken their tips to heart. After being given an odd book report (on American needlecraft), Steve is thrown head-first into his first challenging case: he must recover a national treasure, unmask a criminal mastermind, and complete his school report all while staying clear of cops, thugs, and secret-agent librarians. This page-turner will keep you laughing as Steve tries (unsuccessfully) to use tips from the Bailey Brothers to escape difficult situations. And we guarantee you won't guess the true culprit until the end.
