Encounter

Jane Yolen (1992), 32 pages
Illustrated by David Shannon
Audience: 2nd Grade - 5th Grade
This book presents the Christopher Columbus saga from a very different perspective. The tale is narrated by a young Taino boy living on the island of Guanahani, on which Columbus first landed in October 1492. An excellent read-aloud for older children, this book demonstrates how strange, exciting and frightening the first Taino encounter with Europeans must have been.

Escape From Pompeii

Christina Balit (2003), 26 pages
Illustrated by Christina Balit
Audience: 2nd Grade - 4th Grade
Young Tranio lives in Pompeii, in the shadow of Vesuvius, the 'gentle mountain.' In August of A.D. 79, Vesuvius changed from gentle to deadly when it exploded in a shower of fire, ash and lava. This picture books tells the story Tranio's escape from Pompeii, along with his friend Livia, as the volcano exploded. At the end of the book, Tranio and Livia return many years later to the ruins of Pompeii, and readers get a sense how quickly and completely the people and buildings of this ancient Greek city were buried by the eruption of the once gentle mountain.

Illustrated by Kadir Nelson

This heart-wrenching tale of the effects of slavery on families turns hopeful after Henry escapes to freedom by mailing himself in a box to Philadelphia. Although this escape method may sound crazy, it's actually a true story! The artwork in this book brings out the emotions of Henry and his family. Invention of Hugo Cabret

Brian Selznick (2007), 533 pages
Illustrated by Brian Selznick
Audience: 4th Grade - 12th Grade
Do not let the thick size of this book scare you off. Once you enter this book's world, you will sense that you are watching a silent film. Page after page of pictures shows the adventures of the orphan, Hugo, who lives within the walls of the Paris train station. While the action and adventure is told in pictures, other parts of the story are told in words. This intriguing story makes connections between clocks, an automaton, magic, film creation, and missing people.
