39 Apartments of Ludwig Van Beethoven
Audience: 1st Grade - 5th Grade
|
This quirky look at Beethoven's frequent moves from apartment to apartment emphasizes the humorous side of the composer's chaotic life. No concrete historical evidence explains how Beethoven's heavy, legless pianos were moved, so the author creates some fantastical yet sometimes believable methods. Young readers will enjoy the logistical fun, and, at the same time, they will be introduced to the tumultuous elements of this composer's stressful life. The pen and ink drawings depict the composer with wild, frazzled hair and a scowling mouth. The author's note at the end attempts to clarify which elements in the story are true and which are fictional, but some readers may still be left confused.

Angel on the Square
Audience: 4th Grade - 8th Grade
|
In 1913 Russia, 12-year-old Katya eagerly anticipates leaving her St. Petersburg home, though not her older cousin Misha, to join her mother, a lady-in-waiting in the household of Tsar Nicholas II, but the ensuing years bring world war, revolution, and undreamed-of changes to her life. Excellent 'survival' tale.
