Angelina's Island

Jeanette Winter (2006), 32 pages
Illustrated by Jeanette Winter
Audience: Pre K / K - 5th Grade
Angelina has two lives: the one she lives without enthusiasm during the daytime as a recent immigrant to New York City and the one she dreams about at night--her past sunny island life in Jamaica. To help Angelina cope with her homesickness, her mother encourages her to participate in the Carnival parade. With much happiness, she connects elements she loved from her past life in Jamaica to her current life. After the parade is over, she says, 'I'm home Mama.' New York City is now Angelina's 'island in the sun.' An author's note explains the importance of the traditional Carnival parade for the West Indian people in Brooklyn, New York.

Ashes of Roses was a book that really pulled at my heartstrings. I don't want to give away the ending, but the sad conclusion had made me very sad because I had grown to really know the characters.

Dragon's Gate

Laurence Yep (1993), 272 pages
Audience: 6th Grade - 9th Grade
Otter's dream is to join his adoptive father and his uncle in America. Whenever they return to China, they bring great wealth and are treated as heroes. After Otter accidentally kills a Manchu soldier, he escapes to America. He finds his father and uncle in the California mountains working on the great railroad. Otter learns that although Americans may be fighting for the freedom of the slaves, the Chinese workers are considered not even human. The working conditions are brutal and the Chinese are not allowed to leave the mountain. This is a novel based on the experiences of the Chinese who built the transcontinental railroad at the time of the Civil War. It is the fictionalized account of one boy who faced overwhelming cruelty and prejudice but still followed his dreams.
