If you enjoy variants of the Cinderella story, you won't want to miss this more complex adventure/romance. Dark-thirty:  Southern Tales of the Supernatural

Pat McKissack (1992), 122 pages
Audience: 5th Grade - 8th Grade
This book is a collection of scary short stories from the South. All of them have African-American themes, and are best when they are read in the Dark-Thirty, which is the half hour before nightfall. Read these with a friend, or alone... if you dare!

Eidi

Bodil Bredsdorff (2009), 138 pages
Audience: 4th Grade - 8th Grade
This tale takes place in the harsh but beautiful environment of coastal Denmark--but with no specific time or place, just as in a fairy tale. After her baby brother is born, Eidi leaves her mother and stepfather to live in a nearby village and make a living on her own. She soon meets the orphan, Tink, and rescues him from a dangerous home situation. While the two escape, they rely on clever plots, disguise, and the kindness of strangers. This deeply philosophical tale will touch the hearts of more serious readers.

Ella Enchanted

Gail Carson Levine (1997), 232 pages
Audience: 4th Grade - 8th Grade
When Lucinda the fairy bestowed the gift of obedience on Ella, she did not mean it as a curse. A curse it was however, for anyone, at any time, could order Ella to cut off her hand, hop on one foot, or even kill handsome Prince Char, and Ella would have to obey. This is a story filled with giants, ogres, wicked stepmothers and stepsisters, fairy godmothers, and handsome princes. Ella's account of her quest to break the curse puts a whole new spin on the tale of Cinderella.

Fairest

Gail Carson Levine (2006), 326 pages
Audience: 5th Grade - 12th Grade
The innkeepers at the Featherbed Inn find Aza as an infant, abandonned by her parents, left with almost nothing except a magical singing voice. Aza is hideously ugly and struggles emotionally with her looks. A duchess visiting the inn takes a liking to Aza and invites her to the marriage of the King to Ivi, who soon asks Aza to be her lady-in-waiting. As soon as Ivi reveals herself to be evil and Aza discovers the queen's magical mirror, parallels between 'Fairest' and 'Snow White' become clear. The vain queen will stop at nothing to remain the most beautiful (and to rule the harshest) in the land. Being in serious danger, Aza runs off to the Gnome Caverns, where she is protected by caring gnomes until she chokes on an apple. This adventurous and romantic tale will keep you spellbound until the last page.
